Choose your own adventure ride

For our one day adventure, there is no set itinerary. Rather, our Trip Leaders take into account the weather,  bikes used and rider skill to provide the most interesting highlights for you. Here's your chance to request any locations you have a particular desire to visit and this too may be included.

After a group briefing and bike set-up we head out of Ubud at approximately 10am in a "choose your own adventure" type ride. We enjoy the mountains to the north and generally that's where we will stop for lunch. We may pass waterfalls, ride through tracks with monkeys around us, go to caves, call in to a local farm or maybe a local village market for a taste of fresh local produce.

A good way to immerse in true Indonesian culture! Due to the variability of routes, be prepared for a late finish as on occasion some tracks we pick may not be trafficable all the time. Our office has hot showers so if we get back a little wet or muddy, there is opportunity to clean up before the ride back to your hotel. A stay-over  in Ubud is recommended and we provide return transfers the following day for those that stay on.

Departing at approximately 10am, escaping the Bali traffic we ride to Taman Ayun Temple, boasting magnificent traditional architecture and expansive landscaped gardens. Branching north into the mountainous area of Bedugul and Lake Tamblingan, we lunch overlooking  Buyan Lake. Continuing our course through the forest, we follow local tracks over tranquil hills on steep well-maintained bitumen roads . Our ride finishes for the day at the resort town of Tulamben in the late afternoon. For those that aren't worn out by the day's activities, the town also boasts one of the world's best dive sites, the USS Liberty where you can try SCUBA/snorkeling or swimming as it is only 30m from the beach. Dive tours operate  afternoon, night or early morning (least crowded and most spectacular) and are additional to package price.

The following morning, we ride the twisty and scenic road for about one and a half hours until we reach Amed, a town growing in popularity for its diving and beautiful clean beaches. We break from the main traffic onto a tight, meandering mountain road, perfect for the 'knees out' enthusiasts. If the opportunity arises we may lunch at any number of secluded beach towns along the way. You'll get to experience some of the freshest seafood straight off the boat where you'll most likely be the only tourists. After our lunch, and dependant on the groups needs we can enjoy some forest riding to Besakih or continue to follow the coast road with views across the Badung Straight to Nusa Penida and Lembongan. The tour finishes back in Ubud for a well earned drink and return transfers.

Best suited on our bigger bikes, a very full three day ride through the west coast of Bali and the east coast of Java.

Day 1- An early start  for this tour sees us depart Ubud, zigzagging our way west until we reach the coast where the surfers among us will need to keep focused on the road, passing many surf breaks from Payan to Pesinggahan Beach. We continue on this "Bali Highway" until we reach our ferry at Gilimanuk for the one hour voyage across the Selat Bali. Disembarking in Ketapang, East Java, we track north on the busy highway for approximately an hour, until we are greeted with the entrance to the Baluran National Park at over 25,000 hectares this forest preservation area has large tracts of open Savannah, reminiscent of Africa, an unlikely vista for tropical Indonesia. As we ride through the park, we may  see any number of the 26 mammal species including; native buffalo, deer, wild pig or the rare leopard cat. After watching the sunset over Mt Baluoran, we backtrack to our accommodation, a stay in the Watu Dobol Hotel. Have a splash in the pool and a sumptuous  meal in the restaurant.

Day 2 - After a breakfast with bay views, we travel south past  Banyuwangi, see if you can spot the commercial jet in the shopping centre! We continue to head south to Grajagan; the legendary G-land, arguably the best surf break in Indonesia, where we stop for lunch. Our journey takes us to Red Island, a beautiful bay surrounded by mountains which takes its name from the large red islet jutting out in from of the beach. The further west we travel, the worse the road becomes, a purposeful government move to keep too many tourist and poachers away from this environmentally sensitive national park. You will appreciate the long travel suspension of our motorbikes by the time we reach Sukamade Beach, better known as Turtle Beach. Its 3km beach is off limits to all but foot traffic to preserve the environment and nesting sites. Here we settle overnight and during our stay, there is opportunity to learn more about the turtles and depending on season, see turtles lay their eggs, or hatchlings make their foray into the ocean. A real David Attenborough moment.

Day 3 - We bounce our way from the park then inland through tight twisty secondary mountain roads and areas rarely visited by tourists, but the scenery and immersion into the local culture is something to behold. The mountain range to the north includes Mt Ijen with its sulfur lake. This active volcano is a part of our 6 day Java Mountains Expedition and we hope it whets your appetite for another trip with us. We rejoin the southern highway, returning to the ferry just after lunch.

The north coast road is our route for the afternoon. This is one of the few places in Bali where there is little traffic, the road is well maintained and mostly straight and not many villages to slow us down. Depending on the group we may take a short jaunt to the beach or into the mountains to break up the ride. As night falls, we will be riding over the roof of Bali for a late evening return to Ubud. It is preferable that accommodation is pre-booked in Ubud tonight as you'll want to rest your weary head before the rest of your holiday.

Transfers are available either that night or the following morning.

Mountains, macabre, monkeys, mining and more

This tour allows us to taste the best of both islands with a 4 day sojourn of Bali and Lombok. In Bali there's the mountain lakes, dive sites and tranquil northern beach roads. In Lombok it's more surf breaks, fast open roads, idyllic scenery and inquisitive locals. All these sights divided by the local ferry service and all that it entails.

Day 1 - An early beginning for this tour takes us from our headquarters in Ubud and through rice fields, secondary roads and into the mountains to Lake Batur. We can choose the option of taking a boat trip across the Lake to Trunyan cemetery for those who dare. The dead are not buried but are left visible in various states of decay. At the other end of the sensory spectrum is the hot mineral springs, a very tourist-centric place to relax before we continue our journey. We ride past black lava and around the Batur caldera where the road mimics the undulating terrain; with drop-offs, steep inclines, tight corners and no safety barriers to the quarry below. A road where Clients often ask to u-turn and ride again. So strange but yet so fun. We loop around Mt Batur and travel through the forest between mountains Agung and Abang to arrive at Tulamben Resort for our first night stay. This location is known for snorkeling and SCUBA diving so your free time at the end of the day can be as relaxed or as adventurous as you choose. Check out the USS Liberty whilst you are here.

Day 2 - To catch the best ferry at Padang Bai, it's  best to make an early morning start. Venturing south, we hug the coastline with its narrow but good roads with ample opportunities for photos at local fishing villages along the way. Once we get out tickets we remain portside catching our breath until our chosen ferry moors. A pleasant 5 hour journey to Lombok and an hour ride to our hotel in the capital Mataram.

Day 3 - We take full advantage of this island's well-maintained arterial road network as we wind our way past beautiful beaches on our left and mountain ranges to our right, with views comparable to the Great Ocean Road for jaw-dropping scenery.  A tick on your bucket list if this is your thing. Venturing up through the forest and into the mountains before our lunch at the base camp of Mt Rinjani. With a full belly, we leave this spectacular mountain behind to discover the southern slopes of Lombok. Along this road we may see Macaque monkeys in their natural environment before we open out into the farming plains. Time permitting we may view some ingenious agricultural machinery sans safety protection.  At day's end we finally arrive to our resort hotel at Kuta beach on the southern side of the island.  Take some free time to explore this emerging resort town.

Day 4 - It's likely our tour leader will be off for a dawn surf which you are welcome to join, otherwise it's a relaxing start to the day. Our return leg to Bali sees us travel the south coast  with options to visit many nice beaches including Semeti Beach,  Koeta Beach and Selong Belanak Beach. Heading inland we enter a covert gold-prospecting region, a step back in time, rickety ladders, no ventilation and hand dug shafts. Here you might be lucky enough to buy gold at a great discount directly off the locals. Back to the ferry in the hope we score one with modern amenities and a relaxed lounge. Back in Bali, and a direct route to Ubud sees us at the end of an eye opening and wonderful 4 day ride of approximately 600km. It is preferable that accommodation is pre-booked in Ubud tonight as we are at the mercy of ferry schedules with a late finish a possibility. Transfers are available either that night or the following morning.
